Welcome to Wednesday. Safe moves are officially off the table.
International Women’s Day is usually framed as a celebration of progress.
But celebration without honesty becomes distraction.
For decades, women have been told a simple rule:
Work hard.
Be capable.
Play by the rules.
Power will follow.
The reality is more uncomfortable.
Meritocracy has never been neutral.
And believing in it has cost women far more than we’ve been willing to name.
Why this matters right now:
When meritocracy fails women, it rarely does so loudly.
It convinces them the delay is their fault.
So capable women respond the way they’ve been taught to respond:
They prepare more.
Another credential.
Another certification.
Another layer of proof.
But preparation is not always the missing variable.
Today’s Move
Stop assuming the answer is more preparation. Look for leverage instead.
When progress slows, women are taught to prepare more.

What leverage would change this outcome?
Examples of leverage might look like:
• Raising your rate instead of adding another credential
• Asking for the introduction instead of researching for another month
• Positioning your work publicly instead of waiting to be recognized
Rules:
Do not default to more credentials
Do not confuse readiness with permission
Do not assume effort alone changes power dynamics
Preparation builds capability.
Leverage changes results.
Proof it works
Look at how authority actually develops.
Men are often permitted to grow into leadership publicly.
Women are expected to arrive fully proven.
Men price for authority.
Women price for permission.
The system doesn’t need to block women outright.
It simply delays proportional authority long enough for women to question themselves.
Confusion is one of the most effective control mechanisms a system can produce.

Excellence still matters.
But excellence alone does not secure authority.
Recognizing that isn’t cynical.
It’s clarifying.
